ABOUT THE FILM

Panama Fever: A Caribbean Journey being produced by Alison Saunders, the great-great niece of a Barbadian Panama Canal worker. It traces her journey of discovery of the sacrifices, challenges and achievements of her ancestor and the other West Indian workers on the Panama Canal and their descendents. Alison was awarded a Caribbean Export grant to produce the teaser. She was also awarded a CaribbeanTales scholarship and a Trinidad and Tobago Film Company grant for the 2011 CaribbeanTales Toronto incubator to promote this project during the Toronto International Film Festival.

DIRECTOR


Alison Saunders is a Barbadian/Trinidadian who wrote and directed the first feature film to be exported commercially from Barbados. Hit For Six! is a rich tapestry of Caribbean culture, which, since its release in 2007, has won awards and been screened throughout the region and at film festivals around the world.

Currently, Alison has a thriller, Freedom Run (an awardee of the UNIDO CEMA Film Project), and a documentary on Barbadians and the Panama Canal in development. She has scripted, produced and directed “edutainment” and public service programming for organizations such as UNICEF, UNIFEM, USAID, CARICOM and the Barbados Government. In the 80s she was head of broadcasting for the Barbados Government Information Service.

A graduate of Syracuse University, with a Master’s in Television Production, in 2004 Alison wrote, produced and directed a 13-minute film, The Second Innings in London while she attended a film course at the Metropolitan Film School. The film was well-received in London at the Clapham Picturehouse Cinema and the African & Caribbean Film Festival in Barbados.

She is a founder and board member of the Caribbean Audio-Visual Network and a founder and Vice President of the Barbados Film and Video Association. She is also the founder and managing director of one of the Caribbean’s leading communications firms, SFa Communications Inc. and Blue Waters Productions, a film and video company based in Barbados, which now boasts a state-of-the art, high-definition editing facility and offers full production services.
